Installation of Tunnel Boring Machine At Algiers Subway Station
Sarens CC2400-1 SSL helps with extension work on the Algiers Subway

Sarens was proud to collaborate with client Cosider Travaux Publics on the extension of the Algiers Subway in Oued Smar, a well-trafficked site in the center of Algiers. As part of this operation, Sarens was responsible for installing a 1.465-tonnes tunnel boring machine at a 30-metre depth. Once assembled, the machine measured 104 meters long with a 10-metre diameter.

This was a complex project with many variables: to prepare, the local Sarens engineering department conducted a study to determine the best way to install up to 17 individual components of the machine at an exact depth. Each of the components had different dimensions and weights, the most important of which was the cutter head, which weighed 215 tonnes.

Sarens determined that the CC2400-1 SSL crane, with a 48m main boom and 220T superlift, would be ideal for the job. An important consideration was the significant weight of the 215-tonne cutter head that would need to be lifted at a 19-metre radius.

The CC2400-1 crane was transported to the site directly from another project in the city of Hassi Messaoud, 900km south of Algiers. It took the crew three days to set up the equipment, which then remained on site from July 31, 2019 through November 9, 2019.

Sarens commends the engineering department and the expert crew involved in this operation.
