Sarens believes that our work has a measurable impact on the world, and whether we're improving water quality in London by building better sewage infrastructure or installing nuclear facilities for greener energy options, we're proud to be a part of life-changing projects worldwide. Our latest project for the Children's Cancer Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, is another example of how Sarens' expertise is supporting those who make our world a better place.

The Children's Cancer Hospital in Cairo is a state-of-the-art pediatric oncology hospital providing comprehensive, family-centered care that aims to cure all children with cancer, free of charge. The hospital is doing its part to increase childhood cancer survival rates in Egypt from approx 40%, and has achieved nearly double that survival rate since its opening in 2007.

To add to its wide range of services, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, bone marrow transplants, and more, the hospital is building out its proton therapy capabilities. This is where Sarens comes in: we installed three major components in the Proton Therapy building on behalf of our client Ion Beam Applications (IBA), a high-tech healthcare company working on initiatives like proton therapy, dosimetry, and radiopharmaceuticals.

As part of this initiative, Sarens installed the cyclotron, gantry, and counterweight for the proton therapy center. IBA also entrusted Sarens with electrical and mechanical installation work, which we performed with the help of Ayad Sons.

To execute this project, Sarens selected an LTM 1500-81 crane for the main lifts and an AC200/1 crane with telehandler to assist. The LTM1500 was cross-hired for one week and the AC200 came from the Sarens yard, remaining on site for a month.

With everything ready, and in the presence of the minister from the Belgian Embassy, the 10-member crew began performing the lifts smoothly and safely. The team had to navigate a very narrow work area and crane location with no more than a 10 centimetre clearance from its surroundings, successfully lifting the cyclotron, gantry, and counterweight within three picks over a two-day duration. The heaviest load lifted weighed 82.5 tonnes.

Despite a tight timeframe, the entire project was executed in less than two months. Sarens is proud to have helped IBA make this state-of-the-art proton therapy installation a reality, and to have done our part for the Children's Cancer Hospital. We would like to thank everyone involved in this operation, and everyone who is working to make cancer a thing of the past for children in Cairo and around the world.
