Sarens proudly partnered with NASA and Bechtel to transport, rig and stack the first tower module onto Mobile Launcher 2 (ML2) at Kennedy Space Center. The successful “Rig and Set Mod 4” milestone marks the start of vertical growth for the launch platform’s tower structure, which requires the installation of six more modules that Sarens will help execute. When completed, NASA will use ML2 to assemble, transport, service and launch the powerful Space Launch System Block 1B as part of the Artemis IV mission to the Moon.
Sarens was chosen for the critical Mod 4 rig and set operation because of the company’s unmatched expertise in delivering innovative, safe, and precise heavy lifting and transport solutions. Extensive planning and the deployment of advanced equipment were key to the project's success. Among the equipment used were the CC8800 crane, configured with a Boom Booster and SL Carrier, and the LR1350 crane, as well as 24-line SPMTs and specialised hydraulic systems.
Transporting the CC8800 crane across the United States required a massive logistical effort involving 150 truckloads, with assembly taking three weeks upon arrival at the site. The project presented numerous challenges, including navigating marine and weather conditions, managing logistics during holiday periods, and ensuring precision in confined spaces.
Despite these complexities, Sarens’ team of four worked seamlessly with Bechtel partners to ensure the safe transport, assembly and operation of the heavy lifting equipment needed to make ML2’s construction milestones possible.
Our client stated: “Sarens’ heavy lifting capabilities, expertise, and focus on our shared value of safety have helped Bechtel execute several critical construction operations, from our “Jack and Set” milestone last May, to Mod 4’s “Rig and Set” milestone in January. The ML2 team looks forward to Sarens’ continued support as we begin stacking the remaining six tower modules, adding more than 200 feet to ML2’s structural height over just a couple of months.”
Sarens is to contribute to the ML2 project and play a role in advancing NASA’s space exploration ambitions. By supporting the Artemis Campaign Sarens demonstrates its commitment to innovation and excellence on a truly global stage.
