Sarens once again demonstrated its expertise in heavy lifting and transport with the successful installation of a bridge on the Albertkanaal in Antwerp last March 2025. Selected for this project as a trusted partner of Aelterman, Sarens offered the best price, optimal conditions, and unmatched experience in executing complex operations. The final phase of this ambitious project was completed in just 19 hours—five hours ahead of the allocated 24-hour timeframe.

A Journey from Ghent to Antwerp

The project began in Ghent, where two bridge decks, each weighing 1.100T, were carefully loaded onto Karel Viktor barges along with their 300T bows, bringing the total cargo weight to 2.800T. From there, the structures were transported to Antwerp, where the decks were positioned side by side for welding. A few weeks later, Sarens deployed its 700T and 500T cranes to lift the bows into place, allowing the client to complete the welding process.

Precision Execution Under Tight Deadlines

Six months later, the final and most complex phase of the operation took place. With the bridge constructed on the quay and supported by a temporary structure, Sarens deployed four CS1000 jacking towers to lift it 10 meters. Once elevated, SPMTs were positioned beneath the structure, allowing for the precise transport of half of the bridge onto a barge. When the canal was closed, the barge carried its heavy cargo across the water, where the SPMTs were driven off onto the opposite quay. After precise manoeuvring, the bridge was carefully positioned onto the abutments, marking the successful completion of a challenging and time-sensitive installation.

This project is a testament to Sarens’ engineering excellence, precision planning, and ability to execute complex operations under strict deadlines. By completing the installation ahead of schedule, Sarens has once again reinforced its reputation as a leader in the industry. For more information on the project, watch this video in Flemish.
