Sarens completed the installation of the K101 deep oil refining unit at the Orlen Lietuva refinery, marking its first-ever full-scope heavy lifting and transport operation in Lithuania, commissioned by Petrofac. Through this milestone project in Lithuania, Sarens provided combined engineering design, equipment supply, transport, and installation services in one of the most demanding environments within the refinery.
The key part of the project was the installation of the 40-meter-high, 100-tonne K101 unit in the middle of an operating plant. The location presented extraordinary challenges: confined spaces with clearances of just a few dozen centimeters, live equipment operating nearby, and a hazardous environment requiring strict safety controls. These conditions made accurate engineering and meticulous planning indispensable.
Before the project started, Sarens engineers developed detailed technical solutions with drawings and calculations, selecting the LR1300 crawler crane as the core lifting equipment. Supported by an SPMT, Terex Demag AC-220, GMK5130, and LTM1095 cranes, the operation was carefully choreographed. The unit was first positioned vertically with the AC-220, before the LR1300 executed a 180-degree turn while carrying the suspended load above live installations - working at times within just 10 centimeters of structural obstacles.
To enable this maneuver, a temporary reinforced road was constructed to support the crawler crane under load. The preparation extended over a week, with safety measures including gas analyzers, specialised protective gear, and compliance checks strictly enforced. Over 20 Sarens professionals, from engineers and riggers to sales and site supervisors, were engaged in ensuring flawless execution.
Reflecting on the achievement, Key Account Manager Artūras Dadurka said: “This was our first-ever full-scope operation in Lithuania involving both a crawler crane and SPMT. The success of such a complex lift in one of the country’s most challenging industrial environments proves that we are ready for larger projects and bigger challenges.”
By delivering the K101 installation safely and on schedule, Sarens supported the modernisation of Orlen Lietuva and demonstrated its ability to combine global expertise with local execution. This project sets a benchmark for engineered heavy lifting in Lithuania and demonstrates a precise, on-plan, and safe installation by Sarens that advances the refinery’s modernisation program and supports energy security objectives for the region.
